Ending an Emmy Award winning sitcom on a happy note? Ain’t nobody got the time for that! *cue: funeral march*
Caution: Before proceeding further, readers are advised to ensure that they aren’t seated next to sharp objects and that all pots, pans, knives and expensive cellphones that can double up as potential projectiles are safely locked up.
So kids, get a load of this: Your dad, Ted Mosby, got stood at the altar, broke up with Victoria, broke up with Robin repeatedly, watched from the sidelines as she and Barney PDA-d their way down the aisle and finally found The One - Only to have her taken away.
After waiting (im)patiently for the past nine years to watch Ted happily walk off in the sunset, we’ve picked up suspicious signs that indicate that the woman of his life could possibly be diagnosed with a terminal illness - Carter Bays & Craig Thomas, you see how that can be a problem?
Clue #1. In the 19th episode of the final season of the series, Vesuvius, an older Ted and Cristin Milioti (The mysteriously unnamed Mother) share a moment at the Farhampton Inn where Ted breaks down at the thought of a mother not being able to attend her daughter’s wedding. If a grown man like Ted can’t take it, we might as well start stocking up the tissues from now for the series’ finale on 31st March.
Clue #2. Rewind to the eighth season, and in the futuristic episode The Time Travelers, Ted makes an impassioned speech about wanting to meet The Mother 45 days before he actually did so he didn’t have to miss a moment with her. Thereby, putting the last nail in the coffin, so to speak.
Clue #3. In a recent interview, Robin, played by the dazzling Canadian actress Cobie Smulders, revealed that,“I went up to Craig, and I was like, 'What is the deal with this?' He was like, 'Well, do you want me to tell you?' I was like, 'Yeah! I think I want to know,' and he just laid it out. I immediately started weeping and had to leave. Like, I HAD to leave. I said that, I was like, 'Craig, I have to leave right now. Thank you,' and I just walked away."
Clue #4. Not two weeks later, Alyson Hannigan, who plays Lily, mirrored her reaction on learning the script for the finale. The lady tweeted, “Today we are having our last ever HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER table read. Carter & Craig are trying to rip my heart out on Valentine's Day.” While the end of the phenomenal series is an emotional moment for everyone, snatching away the Mother from an eternal romantic like Ted definitely sounds like heart-ripping material.
Clue #5. When asked, the rest of the cast seemed to echo the sentiments. “It's more complicated than I had thought -- it's not just a simple, one-word ending,” says Barney while Ted famously tweeted, “Read the HIMYM series finale script on the treadmill at the gym this morning. People probably thought that was sweat in my eyes. Suckers.”
Meanwhile, co-founder Craig Thomas tweeted, “@Carter Bays A script co-created with my favorite writer, YOU! Damn, this crap is getting EMOTIONAL!” So, don’t make it emotional. Give him his Mother and the lifetime of happiness that’s been a long, long time coming and we’ll all call it a day. Pretty please?
But then, even for a sitcom of its caliber, the show has never shied away from dealing with tough issues, from Marshal’s dad’s sudden death to Ted & Barney’s serious falling out. Ending it on a practical note could be their way of keeping it for real, as vouched for by Cobie Smulders; “I feel it's very beautiful and very true to life.” While the cast seems to hold all the answers; we, the viewers, have but to wait and watch. And perhaps call in a nationwide flood alert for the 31st of March.
