Happily ever afters aren’t all that overrated, after all.
Much as we love to scoff at Bollywood’s formulaic happy endings and lack of realism, there are some tragic movie endings that had us bawling our eyes out. Check out these seven Bollywood movies of recent times that just had us begging for a do-over:
Kal Ho Na Ho
Adorable as Saif Ali Khan may be, all our lives would have been a little better, and our tissues boxes would have been a whole lot fuller, had SRK pulled a miraculous recovery from his fatal cardiac disease. Since Karan Johar start caring about logic and realism, anyway?
Kal ho Na Ho
Rang De Basanti
While we respect Aamir’s decision to not act in any movie that does anything lesser than hold up a mirror to the true nature of Indian society, you can sign us up for any ending that does NOT feature the adorable gang dying a brutal death.
Rang De Basanti
Boy loves Girl. Girl loves Boy #2. Girl nonetheless leads Boy on and ultimately has him murdered in cold blood. Apparently there was true love in there somewhere. If only there was an alternate ending where the audience gets a chance to enter into the movie and slap Zoya right across the face for being so callous to Kundan, we’d never ask for anything else again.
Yes, Imitiaz Ali. We do get why Nargis’s onscreen death was essential to the essence of the movie and the making of Jordan into an international rockstar. That doesn’t mean we have to like it though.
Kajol’s big comeback to mainstream Bollywood was an emotional moment for fans, for more reasons than one - The ringing applause that the multiple award winning movie would have ended to was overshadowed by the sound of millions of hearts breaking as Aamir breathed his last in Kajol’s arms.
After all the atrocities that John’s onscreen self was put through in the first half of the movie, he was entitled to a walk off in the sunset with his total babe of a wife, Katrina. Or so you’d think. Guy just can’t catch a break, can he?
What we had billed us another Bollywood movie about obsessive love took a tragic turn when Salman’s character was attacked by a gang of thugs and lost his sanity, even as his onscreen love met a similar tragic end. Although he did finally lose that oily hairstyle, so we guess there’s that. Glass half full, right?
