There was a time when walking down the aisle rang the death knell for a Bollywood actress’ career.
Having to choose between a glittering Bollywood career and the bliss of domestic life has now been filed under outdated, right along with Shakti Kapoor. Multitaskers as they are, Bollywood ladies of today simply juggle their home and work lives, their careers flying higher than ever before; the ring on the hand the only way to tell that they are married.
Here’s a list of seven Bollywood divas who didn’t let their marital status affect their star status:
Marriage completely changes a girl’s life. Or so they say. Kareena’s life however, seems to have remained much the same : Meaty Bollywood roles, showstopper appearances for A-list designers and looking hot 24x7; the only difference being that she now has an A-lister husband in Saif Ali Khan to celebrate the accolades with.
Because kissing goodbye to your Bollywood career post marriage is too mainstream. If anything, the number of producers and awards flocking to this diva’s doorstep have increased ever since she tied the knot with bigshot producer Siddarth Roy Kapur.
When the actress married Ajay Devgn back in 1999, (Yes, Ajay Devgn and not Shah Rukh Khan as our ten year old selves somehow always imagined) the critics’ predictions for her career were dire, to say the least. However rather than taking a dip, her career graph shot straight to the top with her award-winning performance in Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham and her subsequent hits under Yashraj cementing her position as one of Bollywood’s most talented ladies - Albeit one that has been shying away from the spotlight off late.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan
The former Miss World’s marriage to Abhishek and the subsequent sabbatical from Bollywood would normally have meant that her celeb status would have taken a hit, but the Bachchan bahu remains as sought after as ever, even managing to keep up the twelve year tradition of signing muster at the Cannes red carpet.
Madhuri Dixit Nene
While many of her counterparts’ comebacks crashed and burned, (The wreckage of Dangerous Ishq still burns a hole in any cinemagoer’s memory) Madhuri’s Bollywood comeback was welcomed by critics and fans alike with the same fervor as on the opening day of Hum Aapke Hai Kaun.
After a long tryst with obscurity, Big Brother happened and Shilpa got on the fast train to limelight - Her marriage to industrialist Raj Kundra in 2009 serving only to cement her position on the social scene.
Malaika Arora Khan
From 1997 when she took the world by storm with her cult dance routine atop a moving train to now, her surname is perhaps all that’s changed about Malaika - Sixteen years down the line, the fashionista still rules the item number circuit and still looks hotter than any 40 year old mother of two has a right to be.
