Believe it or not, it’s been 20 years since we first saw Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit and Karisma Kapoor groove to Chak Dhoom Dhoom in Dil To Pagal Hai, and shed tears as we watched Akshaye Khanna and Suniel Shetty breathe their last in Border.
Take a look at our favourite 10 movies that released 20 years ago, and let the fact that you’re old AF sink in.
1. Chachi 420
Starring Kamal Haasan, the Hindi remake of Mrs Doubtfire, was an absolute hit in the country. And the little girl Bharti, played by Fatima Sana Shaikh who also starred in Dangal last year, is old enough to be breaking box office records along with Aamir Khan. The movie will turn 20 on 19 December this year.
We all remember humming sandese aate hain, hume tadpaate hain as kids and watching Border which gave us all the patriotic feels we needed. On 13 June, it will be 20 years since the movie’s release. Allow that to sink in, kids.
This Ajay Devgn, Kajol, Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla starrer was a fun watch for us ‘90s kids. The OST, especially neend churayi meri kisne o sanam tune was a song we could play on loop and never get sick of. The movie will turn 20 on 28 November this year. How the actors from the film don’t look a day older yet is a mystery to us.
The time when Mahima Chaudhry still had a career in Bollywood, Pardes came out and became a hit. This movie gave us songs that have gone in our ‘Patriotic Playlist’. We still remember dancing to yeh mera India, I love my India on all Independence and Republic Days in school functions. The movie will turn 20 on 8 December.
5. Yes Boss
This was the time when the most popular name had shifted from Raj to Rahul; no wonder so many ‘90s kids are stuck with the most common name we have ever heard of! Moving on, SRK gave us a lovely rom-com along with Juhi Chawla, and a song that was introduced in our younger years that taught us how to love ourselves – I’m the best, I’m the best, I’m the best. Yes Boss will complete 20 years on 18 July.
6. Dil To Pagal Hai
Rahul still being the most popular name, SRK stuck with it for his next movie in the same year — Dil Toh Pagal Hai. This movie without a doubt was, is, and will always be every ‘90s kids’ most favourite love triangle of all times. Dil Toh Pagal Hai will turn 20 on 31 October this year.
Starring Salman Khan in a double role along with Karisma Kapoor and Rambha (who like Mahima Chaudhry also had a Bollywood career of sorts in the ‘90s), Judwaa was one of the most fun movies we had watched. Anu Malik’s signature music was still popular back then. Remember Oonchi hai building lift teri band hai and East or west, India is the best? Yep, those were the good times.
Judwa turned 20 on 7 February.
8. Gupt: The Hidden Secret
It was the time when Bobby Deol still had a Bollywood career. This was possibly his most popular movie ever. While the plot has become a little hazy in our heads over the years, we haven’t forgotten the song gupt, gupt yet. The film will complete 20 years on 15 August.
9. Hero No. 1
Govinda was a true star of the ‘90s. So what if the movie’s plot was absurd and Raju decided to become a servant in his lover, Maya’s home to win her family’s heart rather than using a more realistic and practical approach? It was still fun to watch Govinda’s antics and his dance moves with Karisma Kapoor on sona kitna sona hai.
Exactly after 20 years of Hero No. 1’s release on 21 February 1997, Govinda released Aa Gaya Hero this year on 24 February.
This Sri Devi, Urmila Matondkar and Anil Kapoor starrer was a movie that taught us, at a young age, the importance of family over money. Sri Devi’s character was the biggest villain we saw and she wasn’t even portrayed as one of those classic villains we saw in those times.
The movie turned 20 on 1 February this year.
