Twenty eight-year-old Khushboo Mehta was celebrating her birthday with friends at a rooftop restaurant in Kamala Mills, Mumbai. A video of Mehta cutting the birthday cake with friends, laughing and joking around was taken just minutes before a hellish fire broke out at the venue, claiming 15 lives, including that of the birthday girl. The video was captioned, Happiest Birthday Khushi.

Eleven of the dead were women, most of them in their 20s or early 30s; most of the bodies were found near the women’s washroom. The birthday party was held at the ‘’1 Above’’ restaurant of the four-story building. The fire reportedly started from a false roof that was made of highly inflammable dry bamboo. The BMC has been ordered to conduct an in-depth inquiry into the matter by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Mumbai Congress Committee president Sanjay Nirupam took to Twitter to express his condolences for the victims. But he also pointed out at this is the second case of fire in Mumbai in one month.

“Earlier fire was in a Farsan unit, which was running illegally with the blessings of corrupt BMC officials. No case has been made against officials yet,” tweeted Nirupam.

We’re not sure how investigations and probes will change the situations. Too many innocent lives are frequently claimed because negligence. What’s more terrifying than these accidents is the fact that we’re almost used to it. We’ll forget about these 15 deaths soon with the NYE celebrations. But their loved ones wouldn’t. No amount of apology and orders for probe by higher authorities can make up for Khushboo Mehta’s grandfather’s loss.

"My granddaughter has died. It was her birthday today. No one bothered to check... this restaurant had no fire extinguisher, no equipment to put out fires, no proper outlets. The civic bodies and police did nothing," Khushboo's grandfather lamented.
