While we may never be sure of what life has to offer, there is one thing we can always count on. Every time Taylor Swift breaks up, there will always be a song detailing the failures of her relationship, that’ll follow suit.
Swift’s recent break up with One-direction member Harry Styles has sent fans and media into a tizzy, wondering when her next song with intimate details of her break up will hit the radio sets. Unfortunately though, there has been no news yet.
Although Swift is not the only artist but she has certainly learnt to turn her heartbreaks into big business deals. Mainly in the form of songs that get the cash registers flowing. It’s no secret that many of her previous hits have been based on her high profile relationships with the who’s-who of Hollywood.
Rumour has it, that her recent Grammy nominated album RED, too, is apparently inspired by her relationship with actor Jake Gyllenhaal. Although, she did date two men after Jake, but that didn’t stop Swift from reminiscing about him in her songs. She was evidently found writing songs about their matching blue eyes and star signs, as well as the Thanksgiving dinner she spent with him. In fact, the song ‘State of Grace’ from the same album clearly depicts her heartbreak; as she sings “ Now all we know is don’t let go, we are in love…just you and me. Up in your room and our room is clean. Just twin fire signs, four blue eyes.”
Prior to the release of her album, Swift had revealed in an interview that the ‘earth-shattering’ and absolute crash-and-burn heartbreak will be her inspiration for her next album. So, when she finally did come out with it, all we had to do was the math. In fact, trying to match the lyrics of each song to her past beaus is now an all too familiar game that her fans and the media have learnt to play.
Of course it’s all based on clues, speculations, rumours and sometimes her own admittance, so there’s no guarantee that we get it right most of the time. But, sometimes the clues are so evident that it’s hard to miss the point. For example a song called ‘Dear John’ had its roots hidden in a sweet summer connection that turned sour. The man in question here was singer/songwriter John Mayer. Churning out lines like “Don’t you think I was too young to be messed with? The girl in the dress cried the whole way home. I should’ve known”. Ouch! Clearly, Swift was hinting at John that he should have treated the country singer, who at the time was only 19, with a little bit more care.
When asked in a recent interview, why she would like to make songs that torment her ex-boyfriends, she was quick to respond “Because, it’s fun!”
So, whether her recent break-up with Harry Styles will compel her into making another song is something only time will tell. Until then, we can only wish her a quick recovery from this heartbreak and hope to hear some new music again!
