Just wondering whether you have heard the name Abhishek Kapoor somewhere…vaguely? No. I don’t blame you, many of us overlook the director’s name; he was the writer and director of Rock On!
Recently, the trailer of his new film called Kai Po Che had been released on YouTube and along with Dabangg 2. Fans of his earlier film would be keen to take a peek at this new installment, but before you go ahead and do that, you might want to know that it is an adaptation of Chetan Bhagat’s The 3 Mistakes of My Life.
In an informal chit-chat with the press, director Abhishek Kapoor said, “It is a difficult film to make and it took me more than two-and-a-half, three years to put this story together.” However, acknowledging his hard slog the film’s trailer doesn’t make us look onward to a fresh experience; instead, one recalls films that have already done their bit in entertaining us. The entire trailer is filled to the brim with imagery of three friends bonding, bringing to mind films like Rang De Basanti, Rock On! and Dil Chata Hai.
In fact, Rang De Basanti and Rock On! have been produced by Ronnie Screwvala, who has of late become obsessive in upholding this trend of “bff movies.” Nevertheless, there is still the hope of seeing the filmmaker go beyond the inadequacies of the book; so, I hope to find that Harry Potter experience, where J.K. Rowling uses a different spell as a writer and Alfonso Cuaron works up something as magical but different.
Similarly, when Chetan Bhagat was approached to discuss his involvement in the film, he said: “Well, for my book adaptations, I leave the casting part to the producer and director. If they desire, they may run past the names with me and if I feel that it is okay then that's fine. Even otherwise it is fine with me because such decisions are entirely a director's prerogative.” The three friends in this film are Sushant Singh Rajput, Raj Kumar Yadav and Amit Sadh; all except Yadav have been lifted off television, which shouldn’t remain the only fresh modification.
So, let us keep our fingers crossed until the 22nd of February, 2013.
