They had the big names, they had the bigshot director, they had the monies. But is the end result worth anything more than a one-time watch?
In a year that has already seen some brilliant performances, courtesy NH10 and Piku, Tamasha had its task cut out – Especially given Ranbir’s recent unlucky streak at the box office. But does the movie deliver on its glittering promise? Here’s what the critics have to say:
“Ranbir’s Ved in Tamasha is Imtiaz’s darkest most tortured hero yet. The plot and character seem to be tailormade for the actor. He fits into Imtiaz’s sombre existential scheme with unhampered fluency. Deepika in spite of being shrouded in pensiveness lights up every frame that she occupies. Her character can see the light beyond the darkness that this unhappy script Imtiaz Ali created for her. She invites us to share that invisible light. We do so happily.
“Tamasha is a joyless drama wallowing in the tragic grandeur of two charismatic people who are eager to find a mutual love in one another,” declared Subhash Jha of Firstpost.com.
“'Tamasha' works because of its two incredibly talented performers. Each feeding off each other, and challenging each other at every moment. While the spotlight is deservedly on Ranbir, Deepika lends him the perfect backing," complimented Sneha May Francis of Emirates 24/7.com.
Manjusha Radhakrishnan of Gulf News.com meanwhile rued, "Tamasha may have its heart in the right place, but the conflict in Ved and Tara's lives will not get your pulse racing. The lead actors and Corsica look picture-perfect, but the movie isn't free of blemishes."
