Skating past their better established contemporaries, Bollywood, this year, chose to beam its spotlight on a bevy of debutantes instead!
Just when our senses were starting to cry from the déjà vu of watching the same actresses reprise the same role film after film, Bollywood rebooted its system by importing a horde of newcomers to star opposite their male leads. Here’s a look at 2012’s best imports and how’s life treating them post the big debut:
Yami Gautam: A sage old critic once philosophised, that the quickest way for a TV star to murder their career was to shift to movies. Too bad, they didn’t have Wikipedia back then, for one look at Yami Gautam’s career profile would have left him chewing his words.
She appeared in a couple of daily soaps. She even tried her hand at reality shows. Ad gurus can’t stop fawning over her. And when she landed the plush role of Ashima opposite Ayushmann Khurana in Vicky Donor, the world knew that Yami Gautam had arrived and was here to stay.
Diana Penty: Debuting alongside a fiery Deepika Padukone, at her party animal best, isn’t exactly heartening for a newcomer. Yet, Diana managed to grab eyeballs from the day Cocktail’s first promo went viral, in spite of being covered head to toe in a sedate salwar kameez. And after getting an eyeful of her acting prowess in Cocktail, it hardly comes as surprising that Diana was Imitiaz Ali’s first choice for the female lead opposite Ranbir Kapoor in Rockstar. Sadly for us though, the Bombay born model has set her sights southwards where she’s rumoured to be cast opposite in Venkat Prabhu’s upcoming suspense thriller.
Alia Bhatt: Looking back now, it’s pretty obvious why KJo thought Alia Bhatt was the perfect fit for Shanaya in Student of the Year: She can walk the walk, she can talk the talk and she’s been known to act once in a while, when the mood strikes her. The fact that her family tree includes the who’s who of Bollywood is just an added bonus. Acting skills apart; the petite Alia Bhatt created a huge splash with her much hyped debut and was promptly snapped up by Sajid Nadiadwala for his 2 States’ remake opposite Arjun Kapoor.
Ileana D’cruz: It is a known fact, that when a model is signed on for a film, it isn’t exactly for her shining acting capabilities. Of course, when the model in question happens to be Ileana Dcruz, all generalizations are flung out of the window. After garnering a huge fan following in the Telugu film industry, Ileana took her first steps in Bollywood alongside Ranbir Kapoor in the critically acclaimed Barfi! And managed to score an Oscar nomination, with her very first Bollywood outing; a feat which the best of debutantes have yet to write home about!
Though its early days yet, our hyper active sixth sense tells us that each of these ladies is set to have a long innings in Bollywood. Which one’s your favourite of the lot? Let u know in the comments box!
