Man Sets Himself On Fire After Virat Kohli Fails To Perform

A 63-year-old man setting himself ablaze over Virat Kohli’s poor performance shows how frenzied the country’s obsession with cricket is. A railway employee and huge cricket fan, Babulal Bairva attempted self-immolation after Team India captain, Virat Kohli was sent back for only 5 runs on day one of the ongoing test series against South Africa in Cape Town.

Resident of Madhya Pradesh’s Ratlam district, Bairva was watching the game alone in his room, and got upset when Kohli’s innings had an early ending. He later poured kerosene on himself and set himself on fire. His cries attracted the attention of family and neighbours who immediately rushed to his aid. Bairva sustained burns on his head, neck and shoulders but his condition is reported to be stable. The police, upon probing, found no foul-play in the incident—it was a clear case of self-immolation.

"The man in his statement accepted that he was too upset with the dismissal of Virat Kohli and set himself ablaze,” Do Batti police station Assistant Sub-Inspector PS Alawa told News18.

The police found no other reason that led Bairva to take such an extreme step. Medical reports ruled out any chances of him being under the influence of alcohol during the act.
