Pay & Pee: South Delhi Hotels Ordered to Open Their (Toilet) Doors To General Public

Ever been around a plush five-star hotel when you really, really, REALLY want to pee?

Ever been around a plush five-star hotel when you really, really, REALLY want to pee, and found yourself cursing life, the universe and everything because you can’t enter it JUST to take a whiz?

We’ve all been there. When we’re out and about, we only carefully sip, or go on a drinking strike altogether, because there’s no loos (or no clean loos) around for miles. This sends women into panic, and men straight into/behind cornered walls. But the government thinks it may have found a solution.

According to a recent order, suggested by one Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal, all hotels and restaurants in South Delhi will now have to allow general janta to pop in and use their toilets should they wish to, for a fee of Rs. 5 per visit (towards cleaning and maintenance). Passed by the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), effective 1 April, this will pull in a total of 4,618 eateries (basically every single hotel/eatery that derives its license from SDMC) under the new order.

But while it makes sense to channelise all underused toilets when so many people are struggling to find a decent place to pee, private property owners are annoyed as this order is a freeway for random strangers to step into their spaces at whim, without even seeking service.

While this debate continues, statistics show that the relevant authorities have also done some kickass work to provide urinals in the rural parts of India under the Swachh Bharat mission. And this seems like South Delhi’s legit contribution to the campaign. At the very least, we can hope that this will reduce the number of men who urinate on the streets, and women will finally find some relief – both for their bladders, and their minds.
