He’s been our favourite Britisher in Bollywood, although Tom Alter is of American descent. A well-known face in Indian Cinema, Tom Alter has worked with the greatest filmmakers like Satyajit Ray in Shatranj Ke Khiladi, we saw him in big-budget mainstream movies such as Veer Zaara, and some low-scale, multiplex-cinemas such as Bheja Fry. We haven’t seen much of him onscreen lately, and that’s because the 67-year-old actor has been suffering from stage four skin cancer since the past one year.

On Monday Alter’s son, Jamie Alter, told IANS that his father has been diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma, which is a relapse of what happened to him last year. Unfortunately, the doctors failed to detect the condition last year. Alter also had to get a thumb amputated last year owing to his condition. Alter, who is in stage four of the skin cancer, is now admitted to Mumbai’s Saifee Hospital.

His bodily functions, however, are stable as confirmed by his son. The past week was spent trying to revive Alter’s physical strength, and the doctors are happy with the results. The next round of medication will begin soon after Alter’s physical condition reaches a desired state. His family wants to keep matters private as of now, and will release statements to the media as and when things happen. A brilliant actor, thespian, author, and an indelible part of our growing up, we wish Tom Alter a speedy recovery, and hope to see him back in action soon.
